How to set motorcycle sag and fix a harsh ride

A harsh ride is rarely "bad suspension" - it is usually one or two settings off. Garagely walks you through sag first, then translates what the bike is doing into which adjuster to turn.

Garagely's suspension assistant starts with a guided sag wizard: enter your weight and your fork and shock travel, take three measurements, and get your rider and static sag as a percentage against a target band, plus a spring-rate verdict. From there, a symptom advisor turns what the bike is doing - diving, harsh, kicking - into a specific clicker change with the reasoning behind it. The sag wizard and spring-rate verdict are also free on the web; the in-app assistant is Pro and tracks setups over time.

What a harsh or wallowing ride actually costs you

  • A spring that does not match your weight cannot be fixed by any clicker setting - riding on it anyway means every clicker adjustment is chasing a problem it cannot solve.
  • Guessing at clickers one click at a time on a trailside adjustment wastes a ride figuring out what a wizard would tell you in a minute.
  • A setup that works for you gets forgotten by the next oil change, and you start over from a stock baseline instead of your own dialed-in numbers.
  • Riding a poorly set-up bike is tiring and, in the wrong situation, a control problem, not just a comfort one.

Myth vs reality

The myth

If the ride feels harsh, turn the compression clicker softer.

Why people believe it

Compression is the setting most riders have heard of, and softening it does make small bumps feel less sharp, at least at first.

The reality

A harsh ride is just as often a spring that is too stiff for your weight, which no clicker can fix. Turning compression softer on the wrong spring just adds wallow on top of the harshness.

What to do instead

Run the sag wizard first. If the spring rate is the real problem, the advisor shows "Spring rate first" and holds off on clicker suggestions until that is sorted.

The new adventure bike owner

Bike came stock-set for a rider 15 kg lighter, and every small bump felt harsh from day one.

The sag wizard flagged sag well outside the target band and pointed at a spring-rate issue, not a clicker problem - explaining exactly why turning clickers alone had not helped.

The trail rider chasing a kick

Rear end kicked on square-edge hits and every trailside guess at the rebound clicker made it worse.

Picked "rear kicks" in the symptom advisor and got a specific clicker direction with the reasoning, dialed in at home instead of guessing on the trail.

The rider who dials in once a season

Found a setup that worked last year but could not remember the exact clicker counts after winter storage.

Setup history kept every past configuration, so this season started from last year's dialed-in numbers instead of the stock baseline.

Dialing in suspension, step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your bike's inputs

Weight, fork and shock travel, and whether each end has adjusters, does not, or you are not sure - the catalog can fill this in for a linked model.

  2. 2

    Run the sag wizard

Enter travel, fully extended, and laden sag measurements to get your rider and static sag as a percentage, checked against a target band.

  3. 3

    See the spring-rate verdict

The wizard tells you if the spring itself matches your weight, and shows the front and rear balance side by side.

  4. 4

Pick a symptom if something feels off

Front, rear or whole-bike: dives on braking, harsh on small bumps, rear kicks, bottoming, pogo, or chatter.

  5. 5

Get a specific change with the "Why"

The advisor points to a spring or a clicker change and explains the reasoning, not just a direction to turn.

  6. 6

Save it as a new setup and rate it

Every configuration saves as its own version. Ride it, then rate it better, same or worse than the last one.

  7. 7

Get a rain setup when you need one

Rain setup makes a softer copy of your active setup for wet or low-grip conditions, saved separately so your dry setup stays untouched. It needs a full clicker setup - compression and rebound, front and rear - to build from.

Before and after

Without Garagely

  • Guessing at clickers one at a time, on the trailside, with no baseline.
  • No idea if a harsh ride is a spring problem or a clicker problem.
  • A dialed-in setup forgotten by the next season.

With Garagely

  • A guided sag wizard with a spring-rate verdict in a few measurements.
  • A symptom advisor that names the actual fix, with the reasoning.
  • Every setup saved, rated and ready to come back to.

Questions riders ask

What is the difference between the free sag calculator and the app's suspension assistant?

The free web calculator gives you the sag numbers with no account needed. The in-app assistant is Pro and adds the symptom advisor, setup history and rain setup, tied to your specific bike.

My bike does not have adjustable clickers - is this still useful?

Yes. Sag is set by preload, which most bikes have, so the sag wizard and spring-rate verdict still apply. The advisor only shows clicker suggestions for adjusters your bike actually has.

How does the advisor know which way to turn a clicker?

It reasons from the symptom you pick and your current setup, and always shows the "Why" behind the suggestion, not just a direction.

Can I go back to a previous setup?

Yes. Every configuration is saved as its own version in your setup history, so you can return to an earlier one at any time.

Does the advisor suggest turning a clicker I don't have?

No. It only shows clicker suggestions for the adjusters your bike actually has, front or rear, so you are never told to turn something that is not there.
